What Is A Q Grader?

What Is A Q Grader?

A Q Grader is a certified coffee expert trained to taste, score, and evaluate coffee using a globally standardized system developed by the Coffee Quality Institute. Think of them like wine sommeliers, but for coffee.

Q Graders assess every aspect of a coffee’s profile, including:

  • Aroma
  • Acidity
  • Body
  • Flavor
  • Balance
  • Aftertaste

They undergo rigorous training and must pass a series of sensory and practical exams to earn their certification. Their job is to identify quality, detect defects, and highlight the unique characteristics that make each coffee special.

In short, they make sure every cup you brew delivers the best possible experience.

Two Q Graders at Finca T

Now for something we are incredibly proud of. At Finca T, we are fortunate to have not one, but two certified Q Graders on our team: Lourdes and Elisa.Having two active Q Graders working directly on a farm is rare. There are only about 8,000 to 10,000 active Q Graders worldwide. That means our coffee is evaluated by some of the most highly trained professionals in the industry before it ever leaves origin. For our Alma Familia, that translates to confidence. Every bag you brew has been carefully evaluated by experts who understand coffee at the highest level.

Q Graders at Finca T

Beyond the Cupping Table

Lourdes and Elisa do more than evaluate coffee. In August, Elisa earned 3rd place in a regional coffee filtering competition, showcasing her precision and deep understanding of extraction. In December, Lourdes became an official Q Grader instructor, certified to train and mentor the next generation of coffee professionals. Their accomplishments reflect not only talent, but dedication. They are raising the bar for quality while investing in the future of coffee education.

Coffee tells a story. And Q Graders help make sure it is told well. From the farm at Finca T to your morning brew, every batch is evaluated with care, intention, and expertise. Because when coffee is this complex, quality does not happen by accident. It happens through knowledge, discipline, and a passion for excellence.
