When you shop Alma Coffee, not only are you getting extraordinary coffee, you are also changing lives from here all the way to Honduras. From the very conception of the business, we knew that we wanted to do more than just roast and sell coffee. We wanted to use coffee as a means for making a difference on our family farms in Honduras. Through incorporating the principles of vertical integration alongside our sustainable approach to harvesting coffee, we have been able to make a resounding impact that only continues to grow.
Starting here in Holly Springs, with all of the love and support we have received from the community, we have been able to transform our business from just a roasting and fulfillment space, into a one-stop shop. After lots of planning and consideration, we decided to build a coffee shop into the space. Now when you visit Alma, you get to see coffee through all its final stages: being roasted, packaged, and brewed!
Supporting us helps us help you! For every dollar you spend at Alma Coffee, about 70 cents goes back into the community, compared to only 40 cents from big box stores. When you shop with us, you’re not only getting freshly roasted, farm-to-cup coffee, but you’re also helping build up the surrounding community.
Since the start of our business back in 2019, we have grown from a mere 5 or 6 employees, to a whopping 26. As the business has grown and expanded, our team has had to do the same. We're so grateful that your endless support has allowed us to grow our team so we can in turn serve you better! At this moment, we are making sales on all ends of the country, and we could not be more thankful. With your support, we have grown our business from a small coffee roaster in Holly Springs, Georgia to a coffee business that sells nationwide.
The impact doesn’t stop there. With your continued purchases of our coffee, we have been able to give back to the families that make this business possible. Our farmers in Honduras are some of the hardest working people you will ever meet. This is something that we carry with us through every step of the coffee process. For every cup of coffee brewed, roughly 35 coffee cherries had to be harvested, processed, shipped, and roasted. Since we are very focused on sustaining our land and being environmentally friendly, every coffee cherry is hand-picked by our farmers. This doubles the amount of time it takes for us to harvest coffee as opposed to the companies who use heavy machinery, but we know it’s worth it in the long run because our farms will continue to stay healthy. As a thank you to the farmers, we knew we had to do something that would make a big change… and that we did.
In 2023, we began drawing up plans alongside the Matiak Foundation to build a school on our family farm in Honduras. After months of planning, designing, and building, the school was finally finished in May of 2024. Escuela Rural Mixta Terrerito Matiak Foundation has been open for a few months now and we have already seen a tremendous impact on the community. In Honduras, education rates are concerningly low, to the point where the simple act of just going to school is a luxury that many kids are not afforded. According to Action for Education, “Almost 25% of Honduran children do not receive an education in any capacity.” This is a staggering number when compared to the mere 5% in the United States. All children should have access to an education, and that is something that we want to make true in Honduras. With Escuela Rural Mixta Terrerito Matiak Foundation, we have been able to offer education to children who otherwise would not have had the opportunity.
