Is Coffee Good Or Bad For You? What 2026 Research Actually Says
Share
If you’re a diehard coffee drinker like myself, you probably wonder at times how your coffee consumption affects your health. Is coffee good or bad for you? And seriously, if it was bad for you, would you stop drinking it? I am not so sure I could answer the latter. Because oftentimes I think, the day I stop drinking coffee is the day that I am dead.
The good news is that if you are a coffee snob who enjoys a straight black coffee without the fancy stuff: you are getting all of the positive benefits that come from coffee. In fact, not only did the FDA label black coffee as “healthy” last year, but Scientific American noted this year that recent studies have found coffee could actually reduce dementia risk, protect your liver and even improve gut health.
The American Heart Association found recently that 400 mg of caffeine a day (around 5 cups of coffee) is not only safe to consume BUT could also lower your risk of cardiovascular disease. That’s right, coffee is good for the heart! Literally and figuratively.
Not only is coffee good for the heart, it’s good for the brain, too. A 2026 study published by JAMA followed over 131,000 people for up to 43 years and found that those who drank the most caffeinated coffee were less likely to develop dementia than those who drank the least.

Because Alma proudly sources our coffee beans straight from our farm in Honduras to your cup here in Holly Springs, we are able to offer the freshest, smoothest cup of coffee around - easy to drink and enjoy without needing to add a thing.
It is worth noting that when you add cream and sugar to your coffee, it can counteract its potential benefits, and that everybody’s metabolism, health status and caffeine sensitivity is different - so what may be “healthy” for you, may not be “healthy” for someone else. But of course, it is important to treat yourself every once in a while, so if your body can tolerate it, I say adding a pumpkin spice latte or peanut butter cup latte to your rotation every now and then won’t hurt :) BUT, I am not a doctor!
So, is coffee good or bad for you? I'd say the research is on my side. You will be prying my coffee from my cold dead hands when it's all over.
